Many of th e bars he worked at went out of business, despite the high liquor markup, which puzzled him, he says. Ultimately, he wanted a better understanding of the finance side of the business, and decided to get a master’s in finance at Georgia State University. Wiggins realized then that he still wanted to spend his life in an academic setting and as a teacher, but this time on the college level. â€Å"I couldn’t get rid of the dean and the department chairs at a college, but I could get rid of the parents,† he quips.Wiggins went on to earn his PhD at Georgia State in finance, and then joined the faculty at Bentley University’s business school in 1996 as an assistant professor at 41, a late duckling of sorts who has quickly risen up the academic career ladder. He was promoted in 2007 to full professor, has served as chair of Bentleys finance department and was appointed Dean of Business and the McCallum Graduate School of Business in 2011, overseeing both the gra duate and undergraduate business schools. Bentley was ranked 20th  in Bloomberg Businessweek’s 2014 ranking of undergraduate business programs, and 51st  in U.S. News World Report’s 2015 ranking of best undergraduate business programs.INTEGRATING LIBERAL ARTS INTO THE UNDERGRADUATE BUSINESS PROGRAMIn Wiggins’ four years as dean at the small, private business-oriented university in Waltham, Mass., he’s played an instrumental role in revamping the school’s flagship MBA program to make it shorter in length and more relevant to the school’s increasingly diverse student body. He also was behind the push to add a new MBA program geared toward students with little to no work experience, now called the Emerging Leaders MBA program.On the undergraduate side, he’s been busy making sure that the business school meets the school’s vision of integrating liberal arts into the curriculum, a task he’s accomplished by forging links between humanities and business professors and adding innovative new majors that put philosophy and business professors in the same classroom.Wiggins recently spoke with PoetsQuants’ Alison Damast about what he’s accomplished as dean, some new programs the school is rolling out, and how he believes outsiders perceive Bentley. The following is a transcript of their conversation:What do you believe helps make Bentley unique in a crowded undergraduate business school market?One of the things that we do is fuse together the business and arts and sciences curriculum. It’s a very popular thing at the moment, but we’ve been at it for quite a while and it’s very much in our DNA, not just at a program or organizational level. The Bentley MBA was developed and is co-taught by 30 faculty from the business and arts and sciences department. It’s unusual to have English, philosophy and global studies professors coming into the MBA classroom. Organizationa lly, this idea of fusing business and arts and sciences has had a big impact on our structure. We don’t have a school of arts and sciences and a school of business. We have a dean of arts and sciences and a dean of business, and we’re all overseen by the Provost and VP of academic affairs. There are 19 departments at the school that collaborate in a unified faculty model. There are no structural or college barriers that prevent the faculty from business and arts and sciences working together.How does this fusion of liberal arts and business impact students on a curricular level?  At the undergraduate level, all business majors have the opportunity to take an optional Liberal Studies major in addition to their business major. They can choose from nine thematic programs. So you could do a major in environmental studies and sustainability, business ethics and social responsibility or global studies or international political policy. We provide students with the framewor k to make connections across their programs of study that often strike people as being disconnected.On the inverse side, liberal arts majors can do a business studies major, which is made up of six to eight general business core courses. Those are integrated by design, so any student can package together both the arts and science and business perspective in ways that allow them to make that connection. We do not require liberal arts students to do it, which is intentional. What we find is that the liberal arts students who elect to do the business major bring to it an energy and motivation that really increases the probability of success.What have been some of the innovations at the undergraduate level that you’ve spearheaded as dean?A large part of my role has been working with the dean of arts and sciences, and helping his professors make connections with the business faculty. For example, we expanded the business major two-and-a-half years ago by adding five new arts and s ciences majors to our portfolio, which takes us up to a total of 21 majors. Each of these arts and sciences majors have a very specific business overlay. For example, the mathematical sciences department now offers a major in actuarial science. In the modern languages department, our Spanish faculty offers a Spanish Studies major that teaches students the nuanced differences between Central and South America companies or Iberian ones. They’ll learn what it is like to manage a Spanish firm in a global or multi-cultural environment.We have a new eight-course professional sales major for business majors that will be a collaboration between the management and marketing departments. That has been in response to student demand and market demand. It goes beyond the one or two courses that are available as electives. We’ve also introduced a new joint major called Creative Industries, where our information design and corporate communication department will be working with our E nglish and Media Studies department.One new initiative we’re very excited about that we’re rolling out in January is a new online degree completion program at the undergraduate level. It will be geared towards adult learners who are looking to complete a four-year college program, but for whatever reason got sidetracked or sidelined. We’re targeting people who are in their late twenties to their late thirties, a market of folks who are principally working but are finding themselves blocked from progression or from reentering the workforce. We plan to build a virtual cohort that will migrate through the program together in a relatively short period of time to complete the last two years of the program. The curriculum for the program will be developed from our Emerging Leaders MBA program, which is designed for recent college graduates with little to no work experience. We’ve taken that curriculum and created the undergraduate version for adults learners. T hey will graduate with a degree that will allow them to manage through that obstacle of moving from entry-level management to a supervisory position.How do you think people perceive Bentley today, and has that changed in the last decade or so?  When I first came here, we had 11 different business majors. People principally thought of us as an accounting school based in New England. The school evolved under Joseph Morone’s presidency, and then later under Gloria Cordes Larson into a business university. What this means is we do for business what an institute of technology would do for engineering and science students. We bring that business lens to a variety of schools and help people focus on what are the skill sets and knowledge you need to be an effective organization.   We jumped from being a regional business school that was principally an accounting college to being an international business university. We’ve built a pretty good brand abroad. The piece we skip ped was moving out of the region and going more national. It wasn’t intentional and it wasn’t by desire. It was an artifact of the choices we made.What type of demand are you seeing in terms of applications?The class coming in September is a larger pool of applicants than the previous year. Some of our colleagues at other schools had declining or flat applications, but we actually had more applications. The class we brought in was pretty similar to the last two to three years, with slightly better academic criteria and slightly higher GPAs. They also did a little better on their SATs and had more life experience, whether it was starting their own business, managing stock portfolios or traveling abroad. As a general statement, it is harder to get into Bentley from an academic perspective than it was four or five years ago. I think each time we are ready to bring in the next class, we worry about whether we’ll be able to maintain the quality, but we’ve real ly been fairly fortunate.What advice do you have for prospective student and parents who are looking to find a good undergraduate business program?The process of finding a college or university is a very daunting one, and technology has made information so plentiful that it is almost overwhelming. What I try to convey to parents and to kids are two important criteria: the fit of a school and affordability. The fit piece is really centered around finding a place that has a variety of things that allow you to find your passion but does so in a way that aids your intellectual growth and development. The affordability part stems from there being a huge variety of really good schools out there, from community colleges all the way to the Ivy League. Parents and students need to be really honest about what they can afford to pay because being able to get out of school without huge levels of debt is really important.It is probably not well-known that you can come here and study arts and sci ences and, from your mom and dad’s perspective, your prospects of employment are still pretty good. We have an exceptional career services team that in a variety of surveys is ranked in at least the top ten or top five in the country. In fact, the third world countries have to adapt more towards the western culture. Impact of globalization in quality management in organizations in todays market scenario cannot be neglected. Factors such as cultural diversity, changes in the earning method, employee training and many other concepts are found to be included in the changes of the organization. As pointed out by Gammack and Poon (2013), that with globalization becoming prevalent, the companies have to deal with increasing cultural diversity found in the work place. This kind of scenario demands for effective cooperation from the employees of the organization because this cultural diversity has been benefiting the organizations from different perspectives. Globalization has also opened market for other companies. This has automatically resulted in increase in the earning of the companies (Bakker et al. 2013). The trend of outsourcing has been evolved greatly in the globalization era. This has also forced the companies to think about involving employees in the organizational operation. Due to the various phenomenon and changes that has been a result of the globalization process; there has been change in the culture of the organization as well. Some of these changes can be highlighted here: Reduction in the hierarchical structure: Globalization has made it a factor that things are needed to be responded quickly. With the traditional approach of the organizational structure that was based on hierarchical structure, prompt action became an issue. For the sake of this factor, involving the employees in the operation of the organization is indeed a welcome strategy (Fitzgerald et al. 2013). Boundaries became blurred: With the downfall of the hierarchical organizational structure, the boundaries between the various departments automatically blurred. The employees now take active participation in the working procedure of an organization (Zakoscielna et al. 2014). Team became the building block: Focus has been made on building up a team and the advantages that are gained by the same process. The efficiency towards a particular work definitely increases when a team based focus is made. Changes in management perspectives: The traditional rules and regulations are no more encouraged to follow, but there has been introduction of certain reliefs in the rules. The employees are in fact given the freedom to come up with their innovative ideas and make a collective contribution towards the betterment of the organization. These changes are made for bringing better results in the performance as well as in the productivity of the companies. There have been considerable changes in the technological and knowledge information processing. This clearly opened a wider path for the more creative and innovative boundaries for the employees to involve in the business process of an organization. The cognitive approach has become more complex (Petrou et al. 2016). A more collaborative and team based approach has to be made towards the working procedure of the company. The companies have become more dependent on the technological competence and social skills of the employees. Time has become an important factor in todays scenario. All these factors have contributed towards the changing nature of the working scenario. In this respect, it can be said that internet and the mobile phones have been playing a vital role in shaping the organizational working scenario (Anitha 2014). This has improved the communication method and thus improved the working ability. The role of the management team has become most prominent in this respect. All kinds of workplace solutions are expected to be solved by the management team. For the same reason, various approaches are made by them. Some of these effective tools are- increase in the work space that more employees could accommodate at a particular place and a collective approach is made towards a particular problem or job (Kossek and Thompson 2016). Secondly, meetings are held at regular basis to address the difficulties faced by the employees. This has improved the connectivity and the relationship among the employees and the other members of the company. For improving the working culture and the contribution of the employees towards the organization, it is expected that the management team would take better initiative towards the same approach (Anitha 2014). The Declaration of Sentiments Essay The feminist movement,   considered as another historical event besides the extinction of slavery, played an important role in causing the acute awareness of women’s rights and promoting gender equality in society during the last century. While many writers of this time tried to tackle this social issue,  Ã‚   â€Å"The Yellow Wall paper†, a short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is worth being honored as one of the finest and more aware contribution to the women’s movement. In her voice and the portrayal of the main character Jane, Perkins Gilman accomplished a rare feat: the inclusion of the women as a protagonists in a patriarchal world.   In this story, the writer uses the main character, â€Å"I†, a woman in severe mental depression who demonstrates the oppression   that women at the time   were exposed to and expresses   the outcry that gender equality needed (and needs) to be eliminated entirely.The story is a tale of a woman  Ã‚   progressing from the state of normality to depression to a state of  Ã‚   insanity (due to being denied her creative output of writing), however, the underlying theme of the story expresses the average American woman’s desire to act according to her will in the highly patriarchal society of the 19th Century.Throughout the story, Gilman specifically gave the name of the husband: John, however, when she comes down to   the narrator, the most important character in the story, she uses â€Å"I† or â€Å"myself† (she only uses the narrator’s real name, Jane, once).   This different treatment   seems trivial, but it successfully sent an important message to the readers: during that time, women were so insignificant that even theirs names can be ignored. This view can also be taken in the other direction; Perkins Gilman may have used the first person singular in order for the female reader to more quickly take on the narrator’s persona so t hat her events became a part of the reader’s personal history.   Thus, each woman who reads â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† knows the oppression of being denied important aspects of the self; in this case, writing.   For, it is only when Jane is denied being allowed to write that she truly becomes insane.At the beginning of the story, the author first gave a description of the house and the room that the narrator is supposed to move into for her depression treatment. â€Å"there are hedges and walls and gates that lock, and lots of separate little houses for the gardeners and people.† ; â€Å"the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls.† (Gilman). All these detailed description forms a big contrast with the previous paragraph when the narrator tried to inform us the unique garden surrounding this house, â€Å"There is a delicious garden! I never saw such a gardenlarge and shady, full of box-bordered paths, and lined with long grape-covered arbors with seats under them.† (Gilman) If any readers still don’t   sense the coldness and isolation of the house from the comparison, the description of the wall paper allows for the morbidity of the story to truly be felt,   Ã¢â‚¬Å"It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study†¦ The color is repellent, almost revolting; a smoldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight†(Gilman)The color of the wallpapers is also important reflecting the inner state of the woman. Yellow reflects the state of depression and deep psychological experience of the woman.   The narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper survives the illusions that romance and marriage deprives feelings of happiness and identity caused by her secondary and insignificant role in the life of her husband. The irony is that the husband who has to take care of his wife is unable to recogniz e serious illness and psychological disorder. He treats his wife using yellow wallpaper, but the only thing she needs is his love and acceptance that she is more than a second class human being.The main symbol of the short story is the yellow wallpaper.   The item is a projection of the main character’s psyche.   Jane sees herself, or a different vision of herself trapped in the wallpaper and she claws at it in order to free herself.   Her husband John has denied her, her one release of writing, stating that it would only endanger her mental state further.   It is in this act of denying Jane what helps her define herself in her world that instigates these psychological damages.The wallpaper is a symbol of the angst a woman feels when she is treated as a second class citizen, of when her opinion doesn’t matter, nor her feelings are considered in the deciding of her own fate.   Jane is a very direct link into the author’s own life story, as Charlotte Per kins-Gilman went through a similar crisis.Another subtle symbol in the text is that of the chains of the bed, which harkens the reader to imagine a mental institute in which the patients were so insane they had to be chained to their beds in order for the other people in the institute to feel safe.   The chains are thus a metaphor for the type of life circumstance Jane is going through.In either symbol it is clear that the idea of escape from a patriarch society is needed in order to re-claim the self.   Just as writing was Jane’s tool in the story so was it Perkins-Gilman’s tool in allowing the readers to realize that identity is the one thing that keeps a person sane.   The association the main character had with her identity, that of writing, was denied her and thus her entire identity was lost.   Writing is the pinnacle symbol in the story, illustrating to the readers that without an outlet, a way of communicating and describing one’s imagination and thoughts there is little point in an existence where the self is refuted.The conclusion is that, she , the narrator,   like a lot of women at the time were trapped in this chaotic pattern of the wallpaper, moreover, this chaos causes the women to feel inferior to men in the society. (yellow symbolizes inferiority.) If a woman, like John’s sister, was content with the situation, and never learn to break loose, the only thing they can hope for are men and their place in a patriarchal society. As a result, these 19th century women will never be treated seriously. That is the reason the narrator decides to tear down the yellow wall paper over her last couple of nights, she felt that she has broken the wallpaper and thus her husband and by extension the whole of society that sought to imprison her. This is a powerful message for the women at that time, and was regarded as a sign of craziness. These efforts are by no means considered easy, she has to crawl around in the room as the women crawl around in the â€Å"yellow wallpaper.In the story, the narrator spends a lot of time on describing her husband and the treatment she received from her doctor. There is one thing that is similar between the doctor and the husband: they are not only both highly educated, successful doctors, but the way they feel about women is   also the same: They want to treat the women with passion, and they are both loving, yet the only cure they have for women with mental depression is absolutely staying away from any meaningful work, even something they love to do. Rest and isolation are their receipt for cure. In the story, the narrator is treated like a baby by her husband, she was never treated as a patient.Sunlight is a symbol of her husband’s schedule; he is always available to give her the prescription every walking hour, then he will go somewhere the narrator is not always sure of. The schedule for the narrator is kind of â€Å"strange†, she prefers to sle ep in the sunlight, yet during the moonlight, when her husband’s control loosens, the narrator can be secretively creative. She even creeps outside not being afraid of being caught. The reader cannot   blame the narrator, because this is the only time, during the moonlight, she can find her identity and brave enough to realize her deeply hidden desires. The comparison between oppressive sunlight and free-spirited moonlight further helps the reader understand what the main character has been going through day by day.One more important point that the reader can understand after reading the whole story is aesthetic changes through insanity: Gilmans prose is a model for a convincingly gradual and subtle decline into insanity. The narrators tone changes from naà ¯ve and depressed to paranoid and excited, and as she grows insane, her sentences reflect the state of her mind. Much like the chaotic pattern in the wallpaper, the sentences get choppy and confusing, grafting together disconnected one-line comments.In real life, the author, Ms. Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is a well educated woman who has a strong sense of self-consciousness,   has developed an emotion disorder due to the fatigue and depression.   The prescription she got from her doctor was trying to abandon something she loves to do – writing. This is when â€Å"The Yellow wallpaper† was born. This is truly a wonderful piece by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It reflects the psychological suffering women have to go through during that period of time, and Ms. Gilman accuses society of putting women into this state of paranoia, depression and self-destruction. It discloses the root cause of gender inequality and serves as the marker for the upcoming feminist movement.

My Perception of an Addict - Essay Example Addicts like any other group of people have their own stereotypes and these are what most people think of when they are presented with the concept. In most movies, drug addicts are often portrayed as disheveled, unruly, disoriented, aloof, and of course, snorting cocaine, or smoking marijuana and goes unmindful of the world or worse making trouble. Chain smokers are also similar to drug addicts in terms of portrayal as well as with alcoholics. The latter, aside from being disheveled and disoriented, are also portrayed to pass out. Of course, these presentations in movies and other texts have shaped my perception of addicts and that is they are out of control. As defined, addicts of substances like drugs are characterized by these three things: loss of control, compulsive preoccupation and continued use despite negative consequences. These characterizations in the movies are of course with specific basis. However, not all stereotypes are true to every single occurrence of the conditio n. The TV series Monk has shown a different side of addiction, that of compulsion. Adrian Monk’s character shows an investigator with obsessive-compulsive disorder. At first, he cracks me up like when he couldn’t just leave three flower vases with unevenly distributed flowers, he tries his best to distribute the flowers just to make it even. He also constantly avoids lines in the pavement and this is how his compulsion is being manifested. Another episode also showed him trying to perfectly position the frame hanging in the wall even if it was just a few degrees skewed. Harmless as it may seem but in some cases, addiction is not. Most of the cases featured in Criminal Minds all involve a certain degree of addiction or as termed in the episodes obsession or compulsion. One episode I can’t forget during their earlier seasons was where the unsub or the suspect was obsessed with the number 3. She murders in three’s using three bottles of chemicals and either done on the third floor or with three people, as with the case of her last victims. What have I learned from these portrayals? It shows that addiction can be in varying degrees. It shows that addiction even when it is a synonym of obsession and compulsion is different from the other two terms with respect to the degree of addiction. Addiction can also be toward other things like computer games or even bonsai or other things. People who are addicted to computer games are almost always seen in front of their computer consoles playing day and night. For those who are addicted to other things may find themselves collecting these and storing these things. Some episodes in Pawn Stars and American Pickers showcase people in America who collect these things and not really do anything about them. In one episode of American Pickers, it shows several hectares full of cars just sitting there and deteriorating. When these guys from American Pickers asked if he wanted to sell, he declined not bec ause of their asking price but because of his attachment to these things. This gives another aspect to addiction in my definition is an attachment to material things. Addiction is not just toward material things. David Duchovny was actually into rehab for sex addiction (Serjeant).  Ã‚

Corporate Responsibility and Marketing Strategies Essay Apple corporation bases its success on â€Å"creating innovative, high quality products and services and on demonstrating integrity in every business interaction.† According to Apple, four main principles contribute to integrity: honesty, respect, confidentiality, and compliance. To more thoroughly detail these principles, Apple has drafted a code of business conduct that applies to all its operations, including operations overseas. Apple disappointed socially responsible investors. Apple has come under fire since around 2006 as details emerged surrounding the workplace environment at Apples Chinese suppliers. An article in The New York Times publicized unsatisfactory worker conditions, which included grueling 24-hour shifts, overcrowded dorms, exposure to toxic chemicals, and horrific explosions. Foxconn Technology Group operates many of the plants in question in Chengdu, China. When it comes to customers, Apple is said to be a bold innovator that leads the industry into new directions and forces others to follow. However, when it comes to the management of its supply chain and treatment of workers in the Chinese factories that make its products, Apple hides behind the constraints of prevailing industry practices. What is even more disconcerting is the fact that these practices are in violation of not only local and national laws, but also of Apples own voluntary self-imposed code of conduct. Most of Apples worker-related problems were focused on Apples manufacturing partner Foxconn and its subsidiaries. Apples China operations first caught international attention in June 2006 with a long story in Britains Mail on Sunday.1 This was followed by a series of similar stories in other leading international news media, and has continued to this day.2 Because of Foxconns secrecy, it is well-nigh impossible to develop an accurate assessment of the problems in the factories owned and operated by Foxconn and its various subsidiaries. However, a brief description of extreme conditions prevailing in these factories and widely reported in the  media gave the readers some indication of the enormity of the problems that likely to existed in those plants. Apple has audited many of its suppliers and found violations of its Supplier Code of Conduct, but requesting its suppliers improve working conditions is not as powerful as changing suppliers to ones with more humane conditions. Part of the problem is that Apple has no legal liability for what happens in Chinese factories owned by separate manufacturers. Environmental organization Greenpeace had frequently campaigned against Apple, requesting elimination of non-recyclable hardware components, the removal of toxins from iPhone hardware, and a comprehensive take-back plan to prevent Apple products from ending up as waste. Greenpeace also began a protest in 2003 against Apples use of toxic PVC plastics and brominated flame retardants, or BFRs, in Apple’s products. Apple eliminated these chemicals in 2008, becoming the first laptop maker to do so (Corporate Responsibility Spotlight: Apple, September 14, 2012.) Workers assembling iPhones, iPads and other devices often labor in harsh conditions, according to employees inside China’s plants, worker advocates and documents published by companies themselves. Problems are as varied as onerous work environments and serious — sometimes deadly — safety problems. Under-age workers have helped build Apple’s products, and the company’s suppliers have improperly disposed of hazardous waste and falsified records, according to company reports and advocacy groups that, within China, are often considered reliable, independent monitors. The suppliers demonstrated disregard for workers health. In 2010, 137 workers at an Apple supplier in eastern China were injured after the workers were said to have been ordered to use a poisonous chemical to clean iPhone screens. In 2009 two explosions at iPad factories, including in Chengdu, killed four people and injured 77. Before those blasts, Apple had been alerted to hazardous conditions inside the Chengdu plant, according to a Chinese group that published that warning (Duhigg, Charles and Barboza, David. The publications outlining the ethics and social responsibility violations of Apple caused more consumers to actually start to wonder where and how Apple products are manufactured. Consumers have focused on Apples remarkable products rather than how they are produced. The New York Times story on iPad working conditions, for example, generated 1,770 reader comments. Many, if not most, blasted Apple  or the overall system of cheap labor. And an online petition prompted by the This American Life piece that called for Apple to protect Chinese workers had garnered roughly 166,000 signatures—and counting. I determined that Apple’s customers would be willing to pay more for its products if Apple had to increase selling prices in order to provide better wages and benefits for suppliers’ workers. Apple seems to make people crazy, described as a cult because it has such a vociferous following.† The Secrecy Strategy† (Moltz, John., Why Apple Drives People Crazy. Macworld. Stock-market and financial analysts are known to always have had a hard time understanding Apple because Apple does not sell commodity products or chase market share at the cost of everything else. Its modus operand i is: Enter a market, stake out the high end, and scoop up all the profit. As copycats such as Samsung flood the low end, Apple continued to hold the high end by evolving and differentiating products, while looking for new markets. One key approach used is to never telegraph punches; that way, no would know which market would be remade next. Hence Apples famous veil of secrecy, which further frustrated analysts. The bottom line was that the appeal of Apples products and its business strategies were said to be inscrutable, which made the company a Rorschach test. People saw what they wanted to see, and the idea that Apples fortunes are plummeting is more appealing to many than the idea that it might continue to ride high. The appeal of Apples products and its business strategies are believed to be both inscrutable. Apple joined the FLA in 2012 following intense public attention over allegations of widespread problems at Foxconn, China’s largest private employer. The FLA said both Apple and Foxconn â€Å"have agreed to ongoing assessments by FLA in order to ensure that labor practices meet FLA standards and remain in compliance for the long term.† Current and former Apple executives, moreover, say the company had made significant strides in improving factories in recent years. Apple has a supplier code of conduct that details standards on labor issues, safety protections and other topics. The company has mounted a vigorous auditing campaign, and when abuses are discovered, Apple says, corrections are demanded. And Apple’s annual supplier responsibility reports, in many cases, are the first to report abuses. This month, for the first time, the company released a list identifying many of its suppliers. Apple has continued to be aggressive in  calling out suppliers who dont meet up to its code of conduct. In January, Apple said it had fired Pingzhou Electronics after it was found to be hiring underage workers. Apples Supplier Code of Conduct sets the minimum age for workers at 15. Fulfillment is Gained Through Philosophical Thought The ability to think philosophical is the ability to truly understand and know ones surroundings and everything that influences those surroundings to the degree that knowledge becomes the ultimate understanding and appreciation of the surroundings without question. With this ultimate understanding, a philosopher is able to appreciate life and live life to a fuller degree than the average person. Unfortunately, becoming a philosopher or even recognizing a philosopher can be difficult. Therefore, in order to live a philosophical life, one must understand what philosophy is and have a clear perception of why they desire a life as a philosopher and the hardships that ultimately coincide with it. A philosopher is a person that desires one part of something no greater than the other. He eagerly and freely tries all kinds of learning and avidly wants more knowledge at all times. Unfortunately, a â€Å"true philosopher† can be confused with a person of similar characteristics, a person of sight and sound. The true philosopher is one that searches for the truth behind something that is, unlike the person of sight and sound that only sees or hears what is and then moves on to the next thing, only viewing and listening to it and only appreciating what they can see and hear. The true philosopher searches for the eternal truth behind what is or what is not in determination of reaching the ultimate conclusion on that which is. For example, if we use beauty as a subject, a person of sight or sound would view or hear something beautiful and know it is beautiful and enjoy its beauty and that is it; they would not however search or desire the nature of beauty itself (476 b-c). This is what separates a true philosopher from a person of sight and sound. Thus, a philosopher not only enjoys the object that is beautiful, but he appreciates the meaning of beauty, comparing it to other beautiful things, desiring and embracing the ultimate nature of beauty along with the physical object that is beautiful. The understanding of this beauty as itself allows the philosopher to fully and ultimately understand, like or dislike, or question or conclude anything that he may further want to comprehend on the subject of beauty. Thus, comprehension of this sort gives the true ph ilosopher knowledge of beauty rather than simple opinion. ... ...ot want to share the philosophical knowledge that the philosopher is willing to give because of their predetermined ideas and beliefs. Unfortunately, this refusal and harshness the majority exhibit towards philosophy is caused by those outsiders, rulers and guardians of the city, who do not belong and who have abused one another by indulging in quarrels and arguments in a way that is wholly inappropriate to philosophy (500 a-c). Until the time when philosophers control the city as guardians, they will have to be careful, yet dedicated, to the task of philosophical teaching and thought. With an ultimate understanding and appreciation of the surroundings a philosopher holds as knowledge, he is able to see the truest meanings of life. Unfortunately, not being appreciated by all people and having difficult times at reaching the true understandings for some things weighs hard on a philosopher. Yet, with his courage and high-mindedness, the philosopher is able to be patient with his hardships. Eventually, while forming an understanding and knowledge of everything that surrounds him, the philosopher learns to live a life of fullness, appreciating all that is and all that might not be.

Philosophy of Mind Essay

Since centuries, our philosophers have been trying to unravel mysteries of our memory, thought processes, different emotions, will power and imaginations culminating into what is known as different intellectual and conscious part of our personality.   Our mind, as our great literary figures have posited, is a stream of our consciousness and is a part of our brain’s inherent processes. Our mind is a place where our reasoning power gets the shape and takes the practical form. As also said in Indian Vedic philosophy, He who knows the receptacle (Ayatana) verily becomes the receptacle of his people. Mind is verily the receptacle (of all our knowledge).† – (Chhandogya Upanishad, V-i-5.) Different studies by our philosophers have been compounded into various theories each delving into the depth of various aspects of our mind processes. Its earliest studies have been found in the works of Zarathushtra, Mahatma Budha, Plato, Aristotle, Adi Shankara and many more ancient Greek and Indian Philosophers.   Many of the pre scientific philosophers based their theories on relationship between the mind and the soul, supernatural elements of faith, having a feeling of closeness with divinity or god, but on the other hand modern theorists based their theories on their research and scientific studies of the brain. These theories rely heavily on the fact that the mind is a phenomenon of the brain and is a tantamount of consciousness. The study of the relationship between the body and mind is the most central aspect to the philosophy of mind, despite of the fact that there are number of issues related to the nature of the mind which does not take into consideration its relationship to the physical body. The most crucial and complex differences of thoughts are arising among different theorists regarding the exact and most appropriate theory of mind. Though various theorists have developed their own different versions to make us understand our own functioning of mind yet as more and more theories are coming up, more and more it is getting difficult to come out with the best theory of all. As all theories are able to capture the intensity of readers to make us understand the core of our mind and thoughts, yet it is very challenging to understand â€Å"Which is the best?† Here I am trying to unravel the mystery to understand which theory-Dualism, mind-brain identity or functionalism is a correct theory to understand all about mind. Dualism is a most important school of thought that has tried to solve the most paradoxical and most important relationship of mind and body problems. It has tried to make several attempts to sure that mind and body in some way or the other detach from each other. Roots of Dualism dates far back to Plato, Aristotle and the Sankhya and Yoga schools of Hindu philosophy but in a most precise way it was understood by Rene Descartes only in the 17th century. His philosophical disposition is based on the fact that the mind is independent in itself and constitutes two different kinds of substances like â€Å"res extensa meaning extended things, physical things† and â€Å"res cogitans means thinking things†, (Descartes, Online Edition ). The thinking things are beyond the dimensions of time and space and are thus separate in itself whereas Property dualists thinks that there are several independent properties known to us. It is quite clear from his disposition that he is trying to explain the importance and concept of soul, giving religious discourse. But in this all, he has tried to explain that there is an interaction of mind in pineal gland, from where there is a control on bodily actions and receive sensory perceptions. But this approach of Dualism is not without criticism as its properties are more of dubious in nature. Their theory is based on religion and their ardent faith but no element of scientific fact is found in this. If we visualize and understands that if there is a soul in our physical body and the soul can have drastic effect then it is quite natural that it should be able to generate new energy to bring the bodies into moment.    It is argued that if the soul exists and it can affect the body then it must be able to create new energy to move the body, but this is sheer violation of the theory of the conservation principle.   Owen Flanagan, in his The Science of the Mind says,†If the mind according to Descartes is not a physical system therefore it also could not have any energy to prove herself but in-order to increase this physical energy, the need of the hour is to get it transferred from other physical system but it is not possibl†e. To overcome the limitations of the Dualism, several philosophers and psychologists began to ignore the very concept and existence of mind itself and by doing so their expectations to touch the cord of mind began to flow towards the realistic parts of our lives. Therefore in the beginning the new generation of philosophers came up with what is known as Type Identity Theory.  Ã‚   They posters the view that though the structure of every person’s brain is similar yet in the brain of every person there are certain differences therefore it is not possible to find oneself in a position of same neurological state. Therefore this theory soon took the shape of Token Taken theory implying that if there are two people having different neuropsychological states, then what is it that brings them into the same mental state? And to this they answered that it is due to the function of those two states only that had created them same. This leads to functionalism theory, which says that, â€Å"Two different brain-state tokens would be tokens of the same type of mental state if the two brain states had the same causal relations to the input stimulus that the organism receives, to its various other â€Å"mental† states, and to its output behavior†. (Functionalism, online edition). In simple words, he said that there were supposed to be two thoughts, which are same, and all of the inputs, internal and external, lead to the same output. With this statement, psychologists tried to bring all the conditions of the mind set in equilibrium. This leads to the functionalism theory. Though there are several problems to this approach too yet we can very say that if this theory of functionalism is adopted, it will take us into next major breakthrough, but all is not well with Functionalism too as it failed to explain in clear terms the fact that even if there are conditions of different physical states which gives different material phenomenon, then there is no possibility of different physical structures to regain equality.  Ã‚   . While there is a great controversy to come at the concrete conclusion about which one is correct â€Å"theory of mind,†, but it is a matter of fact that functionalism is the most popular theory among scientists as well as philosophers of today. According to this theory, all the aspects of mental state like beliefs, pains, hopes, fears, etc. depends and are divided on the bases of their activity and are characterized by the jobs they do, or in other words according to the functions that they perform. Just like computers understands the main idea behind our thoughts process in the same way our brains captures our thought processes from our mind and induces us to act accordingly. Article Review: SOX The article entitled The Sarbanes - Oxley Debacle written by Henry Butler and Larry Ribstein discusses their viewpoint of the eponymous piece of legislation. From the adjective that the two use in describing the Sarbanes Oxley Act, it is obvious that they are critical of the legislation and believe that it fails in its endeavors to create accountability or punishment for organizations and businesses that fail to perform ethically and legally. In 2002, the United States government passed a law which is called the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). It is also known as the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act or the Corporate and Auditing Accountability and Responsibility Act. The intention of the legislation was well-intentioned and the authors do not deny this point. What they believe is that the issues that are discussed in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are not being properly resolved with the piece of legislation and that it requires substantial alteratio ns if not outright abolition. One of the major issues that Butler and Ribstein (2006) take with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act is that the law was put into place quickly and in response to current economic disasters.
